Who am I?

My name is Katy. I’m 23 years old. I’ve only ever been out of the country one time. I met Jesus when I was a little girl, but I started actively following him with my whole heart when I was 18. Simply put, life has never looked the same.

Where am I from?

Dayton, Ohio. The sweet town of Centerville is where me, my mom, my dad, and my 17-year-old brother call home. I love that little town! And I love my family more than anything. I also claim home stakes in North Carolina, and I love the town of Elon, North Carolina where I went to school with my whole heart.

I graduated this May from Elon University with a degree in Journalism, Spanish and International Studies. I spent my last semester there working in the Elon Office of Admissions and also in marketing at United Way of Greater High Point. I led a Young Life team at Graham High School and saw God do incredible things in the lives of lost teenagers. Leading Young Life not only let me watch God change high school girls, but allowed God to change me. I wound’t trade it for anything.

I made lifelong friends in college and I can honestly say Elon has been four of the best years of my life.

What am I passionate about doing?

I’m really passionate about telling stories and I feel like the Lord has given me a gift for writing. It’s something I’ve loved since I was little and have felt a pull to pursue in whatever way I can.

I never really considered it much of a gift, as it was just something that I enjoy doing. I’ve never felt particularly spiritually gifted, but then one day my roommate said something that rocked my world: “The Apostle Paul,” she said, “was gifted at writing.”

In addition to these blog posts, I’m excited as I travel to freelance for a youth publication of The Upper Room called devozine! I hope anything and everything I write reflects the One greater than myself.

When I’m not writing things down, I love telling a story with a camera. I love filming, producing, and editing video. This summer I’m on my second year as the video production intern at Sharp Top Cove Young Life camp in beautiful Jasper, Georgia! I get to use a camera to capture moments of kids stepping into freedom and abundant life. I get to look through a lens and spot someone the world might see as an outcast, and make that kid feel like a rockstar when a room of 500 campers sees them on up the big screen and starts cheering.

My first trip (and only, so far) trip out of the country took me to the Dominican Republic for one month where I served at a bilingual Christian-discipleship school called Doulous Discovery Academy as their video production intern. This little boy stole my heart while I was there. His name, is Alejandro.

What do I like to do?

I like to spend time with people. (But I also need my down time, I’m an ENFP if that means anything to you!). I like to read books. The Mark of the Lion series changed my life. I like to drive around with the windows down listening to country music. I like adventures and becoming friends with strangers. I like talking in Spanish and being a wedding videographer on the weekends. I like crafts and strumming on my guitar (the only song I really know is Wagon Wheel…so I hope you like that one!!). I like to think that each creation started on God’s lips as a word; and that we are called to sing out that word in our lives, and I believe my word is JOY.

Who am I spiritually?

I am a daughter of a King. I heard about Jesus when I was a little girl and Jesus never let me go. He pursued me even up to college when I sat outside one night freshman year and told God that my entire life was His. Since then I have seen lives change through the power of Christ. He has rescued my entire immediate family, who all plan to be baptized together in the coming months! MY HEART IS SO OVERWHELMINGLY GLAD!

Lastly, anyone who knows me knows that I have a best friend and I call her my BIFF. Her name is Jordan and I love her unconditionally. I don’t have a sister, but this gets it pretty darn close. We’ve known each other since we were 13, and not seeing her for these 11 months will hurt my heart dearly. But thank Jesus we are friends for all eternity.

Lastly (for real), I am nothing. But I believe Jesus in me is everything. Anything good that comes out of me is never me. It is the Holy Spirit and I can take absolutely no credit. In response, I will stake everything I have on trying to follow His voice, wherever it may call me.

A verse on my lips (or written somewhere on my hand) is usually Psalm 63:3

“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify your name.”

And that is the heart of the Race, for me. Because God’s love is so good, I am compelled to tell others about it.

I can’t wait to see what the coming year brings, I can’t wait to travel the world with these amazing people, I can’t wait to get to know Jesus in a way I never have before–and I can’t wait to share it all with YOU!

One response to “a little bit more about me.”

  1. There is a song we sing at church, when heard, encourages me to lift my hands up to the heavens, brings a tear to my eye and swells my heart with love. You may recognize the scripture that initiated these lyrics. “Here I am Lord…” Isaiah 6:8

I believe God has a plan for each of us. And, I believe mine is to serve here in my own back yard. “Bloom where you are planted.” That’s me. Others are called to “follow him into the mission field away from their comfort zone.” And, that is you. Your smile radiates as you will show God to many who may have never seen His Light the way ‘you glow’.

There is a part of me that envies all you will see. Yet, when I see the smiles of the elderly or twinkle in the eyes of a neighborhood child, I know this is where I belong. You too will see Jesus in the faces of many when you travel the world, for you will be their mirror.

God is blessing you to be a blessing to others. I will be anxious to read the next chapter in “the life of Katy Steele”. And, how honored I am to be able to pray for you and with you. Hugs and kisses. xO
